Do The People at Big 5 Know What They Are Selling? [Blog]

Military weapons should not be available to civilians, crazy or sane.

Recently I went into Big 5 and took a look at the weapons they sell. Of particular interest to me were the .223 weapons sold apparently to anyone that can pass a background investigation, like myself.

The .223 bullet is designed to stop a man because it flies very fast and fragments on impact, tearing up anything in the way. Compared to a .22 the projectile is about the same size but very pointed so it can travel faster and straighter.  This projectile is advertised as a varmint bullet, but actually was adopted by the military for it’s human stopping power, not it’s ability to kill coyotes and raccoons.  Big game hunters wouldn’t use this bullet because it tears up the meat with lead fragments and might not stop a large animal as easily as it does a man.  Big game hunters use bolt-action 1-shot rifles that shoot a big game round like a 30-06.  Real hunters don’t carry military weapons with 30 round clips of .223.

Swat teams use weapons that shoot .223 bullets because generally one shot kills the person.  This is the type of bullet that was used in many of the 20 or so mass-murders that happen every year in this country, a military weapon that should not be available to the public, crazy or sane.

At Big 5 there were several types of .223 weapons that one can buy, and others designed to shoot the almost identical 5.56mm military round, also designed to stop a man. For about $350 at Big 5 you can buy a semi-automatic .223 weapon with a nice scope and a 10-round magazine. They also sell the ammunition where you can buy enough ammo to fill a 30 round clip for about $15. Makes me wonder if the people at Big 5 really know what they are doing?

Online a person can buy 1000 of the 5.56mm projectile with a steel core for about $100, and reload your own man killer bullets.  These are useful for piercing the bullet-proof jackets like law enforcement wears, and apparently no other purpose.  All this is quite legal, and I don’t believe that you need a background check for this transaction.

I’m for making it a felony for anyone to own a military weapon, like the ones that shoot .223 and 5.56 ammunition.  Magazines larger than 10-round should also be illegal in my book.  It’s Time to take the military weapons away from the non-military and stop this nonsense about all weapons are covered by the Second Amendment.  You want a hunting rifle, buy one, but a .223 weapon is only for hunting humans.
