Are Liberal Churches Fading Away?

Liberal churches and conservative ones are losing followers. Does this mean that the departing have found their way?

Are liberal churches disappearing? If you follow the thought line in this op-ed link, you would agree that at some point people decide that they don’t need a church anymore and go off on their own.

I have always thought of churches, ideally speaking, as hospitals; when the patient is healed, they head home. Thus, if the church has done God’s work properly, the membership will head off on their own, secure that they have the understanding of life that will get them through this one, and on to the next depending on their belief.

The flip side of liberal churches with declining membership is the Catholic Church, and some other “conservative” religious originations, are also seeing declining memberships, apparently due to their relentless dogma in a liberated world. In the aforementioned op-ed, the author cites churches promoting Christianity as God wanting the parishioners to be rich. That should turn off any Christian with my understanding, but maybe it takes time for them to come around?

Both ends, Liberal and Conservative, are suffering declines in their membership, and if that fits my model of people being enlightened, then we are moving forward. Close the hospital, because everyone is healed!

If only it were true!
