The Big “D”

My husband and I are currently facing our first deployment. When asked to describe the experience I always think: “You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have… Deployment”

Hmm, maybe that wasn’t exactly how that goes. Deployments are like any challenge in life; if you focus on the positives, it eventually gets easier, right?

I could tell you how it’s hard because I can’t explain to my puppy why he is gone. I could tell you how it becomes unbearable to listen to our song or how sometimes you get really angry with no one to be mad at. I could tell you that, and in fact, I just did. But let’s not dwell on the negative.

Do you know how many things Marines wear? I haven’t had to wash uniforms in weeks! I watch whatever I want, including every Jake Gyllenhaal movie I can get my hands on. I spend less money at the grocery store and less time in the kitchen. See how much fun this can be?!

In truth, the good will not outweigh the bad if all you have to think about is laundry and Donnie Darko. Besides, full control of the remote is dangerous and the power always goes to your head.

What really helps is having great neighbors. The other day, my neighbor and I went out for dinner. I asked her where she wanted to go and she said, “Some place local.” Our military community is getting out and seeing all that Ramona has to offer? This is a dream come true! Instead of dwelling on the big D, I get to show really great gals what this town has to offer.

The Ramona charm might not be for everyone, but I would rather hang out at Packards then sit at home feeling down, any day. So, I can’t say that positive thinking makes anything easier, but I know for a fact that Ramona’s food and a friendly face can make anything better!
