Poll: What Kind of Restaurant Do You Want To See in Ramona?

Ray's Pizza has closed and renovations have been going on inside the space. We ask what you want to see go up in its place.

The space where Ray's NY Giant Pizza once stood at 1270 Main St. is being renovated for a brand new restaurant.

Mum's the word on what kind of eatery the new space will be, according to a sign on the building's door. An opening date also seems to be in question.

Rumors are swirling around what kind of restaurant will take its place, but Patch wants to hear from you. What type of eating establishment would you like to see in the space? Does Ramona need more variety? Vote in the poll below and leave a comment with your foodie wishes!

*Note: You must be signed in to your Patch account to participate in the poll.

Anything but Mexican Food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ben Cass July 13, 2012 at 04:24 PM
Panda or Panera!!
Ramona Resident July 13, 2012 at 04:38 PM
The sign is creative and intriguing. Think big! I hope it's not another Panda/Panera/Islands -- we have lots of opportunities to eat at these places whenever we go "down the hill." I hope it's a local shop owner with restaurant experience, bringing us some sort of food that they're passionate about. Like Amicis, Nikos, La Cocina, Kountry Kitchen... less traffic, more local jobs and a Ramona original!

I don't know how many times Ramona has had a BBQ joint start up, but they have never lasted long. It would be nice to have one. BBQ is the best!
Diane Zane July 13, 2012 at 05:46 PM
Send Phil's BBQ up here.
Elaine Lyttleton July 13, 2012 at 05:52 PM
Not another Mexican restaurant. A Jeremys on the Hill sort, nice with local wines on the menu.
Christine Phillips July 13, 2012 at 05:58 PM
Oh, Jeremy's would be wonderful, but not sure this Ramona crowd would support them. BBQ never lasts! Not another Mexican, we already have the best, and no more pizza. Amici's has the Italian market cornered, something new like Thai or Indian. People up here need to open their minds and expand their horizons!!!
Paula Riddle July 13, 2012 at 06:20 PM
Good Chinese food would be wonderful.
Teresa Munyer July 13, 2012 at 07:16 PM
Thai or Indian would be great!
Jane Tanaka MD July 14, 2012 at 04:17 AM
Cuban/Miami cuisine with Asian fusion. Mojitos... Black beans and rice, jerk chicken chopped salads, tea smoked duck tacos, korean bar-b-q ribs.. ... tres-leches cake drowned in rum ....

Anybody in this town ever hear of good ole American food like IHOP?
Jolinda July 14, 2012 at 03:12 PM
I'm with Jane here...something creative and QUALITY. Sorry but you can't use the word "good" with IHOP. Maybe mediocre. We have enough of that kind of food...something WOW with some nice outdoor dining would be great...although this is probably not the best location for it. It needs a building like where the bank is moving out of and Starbucks is moving into. We're foodies, and when we go to "eat" we go down the hill or to Jeremy's. I could design/organize/run this type of great food eatery but would need some serious backing :) Check out the OB Noodle House if you want to see where the youth are dropping their big bucks...an out the door line at 5:30 and only warming up at 9...
Jolinda July 14, 2012 at 03:14 PM
We have Denny's...same flavor and quality.
greg Chick July 14, 2012 at 05:33 PM
Jolinda, Touche!, Souplantation, open till 11pm would be good for me. But I must say I would rather see us support the ones we have to a point they cam stay open till 11 pm.! As you can see, hours and quality are important. I think the fast food joints are a poor choice. The sole proprietor Chef grade like Amicis can also be other than Italian. Justin Time was great, we did not support him. We have a demand side problem not supply side problem. Like the thread asks, what do you want? lets keep in mind we need local support. Ramona's Plumber, Ramona only not Ramonas' only but only the best. except for Jim Haworth who is Ramona's Favorite according to a News Paper Pool. My point? as they say in Real estate, Location, Location, Location. Buy local, from a Ramonan. We have some great people here tell the ones here what you want them to cook! or not cook, or how late to stay open.... Hint 11 pm.
Christine Phillips July 14, 2012 at 05:48 PM
Jolinda, exactly what came to mind, plus Sizzler, I lose my dinner whenever I eat at either! Oh and then there is DiCarlos, barf on all three. Want a really good hamburger though, try Cheers!
Christine Phillips July 14, 2012 at 05:51 PM
I like your thinking, you could starve in this town after 9 pm, unless you want dirve thru! Subway has been a great addition to the drive thru fare though.
Christine Phillips July 14, 2012 at 05:58 PM
I forgot Jim McWhorter's food wagon, soon to be restaurant, it is great American food, with a flair. His burgers and sweet potato fries are fantastic! Then of course you have the old favorites Kountry Kitchen and Ramona Cafe. Have you tried the REAL roast turkey sandwich at Kountry Kitchen? Like the day after Thanksgiving! The Ramona Cafe had a wonderful Mother's Day breakfast, complete with champagne! The county tends to be one of the big problems a person deals with when they want to open a new restaurant. But we need to support our locals too.
Ramonian July 14, 2012 at 07:07 PM
I heard a hooka bar is going in on half of where Ray's used to be.
Nadine Zaleski July 16, 2012 at 08:59 AM
My votes: Thai, Vietnamese, Asian fusion. AUTHENTIC...high quality only! No corporate chain places...pleeeez! Indian would be incredible as well:D I'm w you, Christine. Let's broaden our minds and palates a bit out here ;)
Jolinda July 16, 2012 at 05:56 PM
Greg...I always enjoy your intelligent comments. I remember you from early skateboarding efforts, if my memory serves...a good guy who was very helpful to kids in need to healthy activity. However, "only the best" plumber...well, honestly...I'm married to Marshall Plumbing. While we've lived here 20+ years most of Jim's work is in La Jolla and Del Mar so he's never worked to establish himself here. But he's good, a good guy, and very talented and committed to what he does...so you're just going to have to share a bit :). And yes...supporting local is very important too. Just tough if you have more sophisticated taste.
Donna S Rindskopf July 16, 2012 at 08:50 PM
A good quality Asian type food with vegetarian choices. We definitely need another good restaurant but not Mexican or Italian. A restaurant with an assortment of choices of food on the menu is another suggestion. DiCarlos needs some competition.
Ophelia July 17, 2012 at 02:54 AM
LOL "June"? June what? June 2012 was like 3 weeks ago. D'you think they mean June 2032? :)
Bob Isaacson July 17, 2012 at 11:04 PM
Sorry about the delay in opening... It was supposed to be a simple re-theme. Ray's bank foreclosed on the equipment, which was in very poor condition, and the hood system and ansul systems need substantial repair. We stumbled across this thread by chance, and how fun to hear what Ramonians want. We are getting closer, but it will take a little while longer. How 'bout Mexican fast food pizza? Just kidding, but it is still a secret. By the way we need an old ford front end (just the body) to complete the dining area, but haven't found one yet. Keep the thoughts going, though, we haven't sealed the menu in stone yet!

LOVE GOOD THAI FOOD
Catryna White August 08, 2012 at 01:30 PM
Unfortunately, Jim's place folded. I'm sorry, Ramona Cafe once was a great place to eat, back in the 90s. I recently took my grandchildren there to eat and was very disappointed. Well, more like disgusted with the food, to be honest. I won't be returning. I take them to the buffet at D'Carlos, now. One of them likes Denney's, but what does a 4 year old know?
Catryna White August 08, 2012 at 01:33 PM
Donna, I'm with you on this one. Amerient is the only Chinese food restaurant in Ramona, but everything tastes the same and is overcooked. The other Chinese restaurant.........Ugh, I won't even go into.
