Open for Business: Ramona Cafe Bake Shop

The highly-anticipated Ramona Bake Shop, adjacent to Ramona Cafe, is open for business.

may serve up breakfast, lunch and dinner, but we all know the landmark restaurant as "the place with the cinnamon rolls!" It was even featured on Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives because of them! But now, the cafe has its own space dedicated soley to all-things sweet.

Ramona Cafe owner Sonja Steiner said the shop, which opened Sept. 1, was one and a half years in the making and a product of customer input and lack of bakeries in town.

"I had people ask me... they like to buy whole pies without having to order them a head of time," Steiner said. "And we don't have a bakery in Ramona."

Steiner said everything is made from scratch–you won't find any pre-made mixes in their kitchen. All the apples are peeled themselves and all ingredients are "quality," according to Steiner.

"We use butter," Steiner said in jest.

Each recipe, from cakes to cookies to those famous cinnamon rolls, comes from Steiner's mom.

"She was quite a baker in her day," said Steiner, who does the baking for the shop.

As of now, the new shop sells three different types of cinnamon rolls, including chocolate and original, sticky buns, carrot cake and cupcakes. But they're planning to expand their sweet service to special occasion cakes, muffins and more.

"We're going to do cookies and custom-made cakes, too." Steiner said.

The shop, which sits adjacent to Ramona Cafe, sells four different kinds of coffee, but Steiner said she's going to purhase an esperesso machine so specialty coffees can be made.

As of now, the hot sellers in the bake shop are apple crunch pie and the peanut butter or red velvet cupcakes.

Steiner said the new shop is unique and has a "homey" feel that residents can appreciate.

"It's a good calling for Ramona to have something like this," she said.

Ramona Cafe Bake Shop is open everyday from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. and offers free wi-fi. Steiner said the shop is still a work in progress, but the space should completed in a month.

There will be a grand opening on Sept. 14 and residents are encouraged to stop by and snag two cupcakes for the price of one! In the meantime, stop by and sample the sweets, sip some coffee and feel at home.
