Four to eight inches of snow fell in San Diego County mountains Wednesday night and early Thursday. More snow is possible through 1 p.m., according to the National Weather Service, though Julian merchants told Patch that the roads were clear and it was sunny at 9:30 a.m.

A Mt. Laguna Fire Station spokesman told Patch that it was snowing there at 10 a.m. Thursday. The station is just under 6,000 feet. He estimated there was 6 inches of snow on the ground. He also recommended chains on Sunrise Highway up the mountain, even if they are not required, especially for drivers who are not experienced with snow.

Laguna Mountain Lodge, at 6,000 feet, reported 7 inches of snow at 7:30 a.m. Thursday and "poor" road conditions. The County Department of Public Works crews are plowing the roads, as requested by California Highway Patrol. Chains were required Thursday morning.

"Definitely less snow in Julian this morning than there was two days ago, but it is definitely colder since the snow seems to be sticking to everything more. The biggest peril I see for people coming up is black ice. There wasn't any up to Julian coming from Ramona today (Thursday), but I can only guess there is lots above Julian and possibly will be tomorrow after the skies clear and it gets down to freezing overnight."
