Local Artists Open Their Studios for Visitors April 9-10

Ramona Open Studios Tour will feature the works of 18 local artists at 14 locations. Visitors will be able to watch the artists at work.

The eighth annual Ramona Open Studios Tour will give visitors an opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes while artists are at work in their own surroundings.

Visitors can go to as many or as few of the 14 studios on the self-guided tour that will be open between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on April 9 and 10. Some of the artists will share studio space. Works of art will be for sale.

The Open Studios Tour is sponsored by Ramona Chamber of Commerce. Judy Nachazel is coordinating the event, assisted by Susan Bainbridge.

"To keep the tour fresh, there are several new artists opening their studios for the first time,” Nachazel said. “All of the artists are looking forward to talking with interested visitors who would like to know more about how they make art and why. The dialog gives insight into the artist's purpose,  up close and personal."

Artists new to the tour this year are Susie Amundson, Jolinda Marshall, John Hyder, Regina Wilson and Molly Jaeger-Begent, who is showing with her husband, Dave Begent.

Amundson is a flame-worker who works with both borosilicate and soda lime glass. She learned her craft at The Studio, the educational facility at the Corning Museum of Glass in her hometown of Corning, N. Y.. Her inspirations come from nature’s simple and complex objects.

Marshall works in fused glass, specializing in architectural glass. She started working in flat glass about 30 years ago and now works mainly with fused, painted and cast glass. Her large residential and commercial projects include mosaic murals and pool designs.

Hyder makes raku pottery. His southwestern and horsehair raku designs have won numerous awards at art shows and ceramic competitions in the western United States.

Wilson began painting in watercolors about 12 years ago. She now includes acrylic for the intensity and vibrancy of color. Her subjects are mainly landscapes, figures and florals.

Jaeger-Begent is an acrylic painter, and her husband is a sculptor. They are the owners of Highland Valley Studio, a nonprofit visual arts facility on Highland Valley Road in Ramona. They support and promote individual artistic skills and talents through art education workshops held at their ranch, often hosting nationally recognized artists in all fields of visual arts.
