Your choices, near Ramona and in San Diego, include a nearly week-long display of local student musical talent, a regatta on the bay and a big day in Ocean Beach, where a new fair will take place alongside the tried-and-true Kite Festival.

BEST BETS CLOSE TO HOME

  • Where/when: Ramona Community Park, various times, Wednesday through Saturday.
  • Why Go: Boys and girls teams are being established in the Ramona Soccer League. Girls' tryouts continue from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday and 1-3 p.m. Saturday. Boys' continue from 5-7 p.m. Thursday and from 1-3 p.m. Saturday.
  • Price: Free.
  • Where/when: Ramona Community Park, 8 a.m. Saturday.
  • Why Go: The Pony League launches its baseball season with a player parade and a visit from the San Diego Padres Friar.
  • Price: Free.

BEST BETS, A LITTLE FARTHER OUT

  • Where/when: Poway Center for the Performing Arts, Poway, Wednesday through Sunday.
  • Why Go: To see Poway students of all ages show off their musical talents, culminating in the Middle School Orchestra Festival on Sunday. The high school hosts two pre-festival concerts Wednesday and Thursday and the "Poway's Got Talent" show Friday. 
  • Price: Range from free to $15, depending on the event.
  • Where/when: San Diego Bay, San Diego, 11 a.m., Wednesday through Sunday.
  • Why Go: To see sailors from around the world, including America's Cup winners, join in the RC-44 Championship Tour, named for the type of sailboat in which they'll compete.
  • Price: Free.
  • Where/when: Ocean Beach, San Diego, Saturday.
  • Why Go: Make it a day on the beach with two big street fairs . The venerable  hits the Ocean Beach Recreation Center, for kite making and a parade, at 9 a.m. Then the newbie, , starts at 11 a.m. with bands, skateboarding demos and an art fair.
  • Price: Free.
