Witch Creek Winery Wins Prestigious San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition Medals

The local winery has a tasting room in Julian for those curious to try the award-winning vino.

For the sixth consecutive year, Witch Creek Winery, which has a tasting room in Julian and Carlsbad, has won the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition’s Gold and Silver Medals.

The competition, which was founded in 1983 as the modestly sized Cloverdale Citrus Fair Wine Competition, includes wineries from all over the US.

With over 5500 wines entered and with 60 judges, this is the largest competition of American wines in the world. Proceeds from the event benefit the Santa Rosa Junior College Wine Studies and Culinary Programs: the Enology/Wine Programs at CSU Fresno and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Witch Creek Winery was founded in 1993 as a boutique winery focusing on quality over quantity. By producing small-lot, handcrafted wines using traditional winemaking techniques, the result is full-bodied well balanced wines, rich in flavor, that have earned many medals over the years at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and Orange County Wine Competition.

Witch Creek prides itself on being the source of some of the more unique and harder to find domestically produced varietals, such as Nebbiolo, Teroldego and Montepulciano. The Carlsbad tasting room is located on site at the winery (just one block from the beach!) at 2906 Carlsbad Blvd.

Just an hour's drive east of San Diego you'll find Witch Creek's Julian tasting room at 2000 Main St. Nestled up in the mountains of the historic gold-mining town, Julian is one of Southern California's premier mountain retreats.
