Thunderstorms, Flash Floods Possible in East County as San Diego Swelters

The temperature in Ramona hit 97 degrees at 3 p.m. while thunderstorms were developing farther east.

Temperatures 10 degrees above normal on Thursday sent many locals in search of air-conditioning as East County residents braced for possible thunderstorms and even flooding.

At 3 p.m. the National Weather Service reported temperatures of 82 degrees at Lindbergh Field and 97 degrees in Ramona.

The forecast called for highs of 82 to 87 degrees near the coast, and 92 to 97 inland. Temperatures will be one or two degrees lower on Friday.

The National Weather Service Western region headquarters in San Diego said strong thunderstorms over the mountains this afternoon are capable of producing heavy rain, small hail, and gusty outflow winds.

Flash flooding is also possible, the weather service said, especially over recently burned areas.

The warning affected Julian, Santa Ysabel, Campo, Pine Valley, Descanso, Warner Springs and other areas of East County. Highways 78 and 79 as well as Interstate 8 could be affected.
