Healdsburg Plaza Dances to Women's Anthem on V-Day

"One Billion Rising" protests violence against women in 200 countries with the V-Day "flash mob," and Healdsburg Plaza's noon demonstration was in the front line

Well over 100 men and women found themselves in the Healdsburg Plaza at noon today, "V-Day" in the term of the women's rights movement. The reason was a lively song and dance demonstration to end violence against women and girls.

The action was one of thousands planned around the world as part of "One Billion Rising,” an international movement to end violence in all its forms. In addition to the Healdsburg event, events were planned throughout the Bay Area at various times, including in Petaluma, Sonoma and San Francisco.

The song and dance "flash mob" in Healdsburg performed the choreographed steps to "Break the Chains” -- first in English, and then in Spanish, an anthem of the movement. Two of Healdsburg's dance and exercise instructors, Kris Freewoman and Jan Blalock, led the event.

About 40 women participated in the performance, with twice that number of spectators, men and women, looking on, singing along, and cheering and applauding as it ended.

Many in the audience took photos and even video of the action, and Healdsburg Patch would like to welcome you to add your own shots of the Plaza performance to this story.
