July 4th in Ramona and the Backcountry

Ramonans will be going "up the hill" for Julian's annual parade, while hundreds are expected to turn out for the annual fireworks in town.

Fourth of July is just around the corner and folks are gearing up for two big events. Many people from Ramona will head up the mountain to Julian for the annual Fourth of July Parade. Some are going to march or ride along the parade route.

Topping the list of parade entries is the Ramona Town Hall Brass Band under the leadership of bandmaster Ken Serfass. They will be dressed in their finest uniforms from the Civil War era as they march down Main Street.

Popular entries include the old-time tractors, restored by a group of men and women from a Ramona group. Pre-parade festivities will begin at 11 a.m. with the parade starting at noon on July 4. It will travel from the staging area at Julian High School and head west along the main drag to Frank Lane Park.

Faith Knott, 12, has harvested her first crop of yellow squash and zucchini at the Ramona Community Garden and donated the vegetables to Ramona Senior Center. The garden started out as a project for Faith’s sixth grade class at Barnett Elementary School. She moved it to the community garden on San Vicente Road to allow more time for planting and harvesting. She is planting tomatoes this week and will be making another donation to the senior center as soon as the tomatoes are ripe.
