The accident occurred when a green Chevy pick-up truck heading northbound lost control and struck two cars—a blue Corolla and a silver Camry—in the southbound lane head-on, according to CHP officer Joe Nielsen.

Two male adults in the Chevy, and one male adult and one female adult in the Camry were declared dead at the scene. A female adult in the Chevy, and a female adult and a five-year-old girl in the Corolla were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries, according to CHP and Cal Fire. (The injury level was variously reported by officials and so it has been removed.)

The 20-year-old driver of the Chevy 1500 Silverado truck—a Poway resident—lost control for unknown reasons, according to Nielsen. Conditions were foggy and drizzly at the time and the accident occurred near a bend in the highway. CHP spokesman Brian Pennings reported Friday afternoon that witnesses and physical evidence showed the truck was traveling at high speed.

The other male in the truck who died was a 34-year-old San Diego resident, Pennings reported Friday afternoon. The female rear passenger sustained unknown internal injuries.

Nicole Pinning, 24, of Ramona and her 5-year-old female passenger were transported with injuries reported to be moderate at the time of the accident.

The accident occurred just south of Rock House Road in the unincorporated Rosemont area at about 10 a.m., according to the CHP.

The wreck forced the closure of the roadway between Poway and Archie Moore roads. Both lanes opened at about 1 p.m.

No names of the deceased have been released, pending verification by the Medical Examiner's staff.
